"We've seen that qantas made a profit last year of some 250 million dollars approx. Clearly investors expect a dividend out of that profit yet an airline requires massive capital investment for its infrastructure (leave alone ridiculous salaries for chief execs). The question is how much of that profit should really go to investors. From the airlines point of view, probably none as it needs the money for new planes etc."

QANTAS's obligations are to it's passengers and the company. SH are not a consideration for a dividend, as a priority. Have a look at QANTAS's SP. Would you prefer a dividend or no dividend and a SP within reach of it's 52 week high. QAN went into 'risky' territory when it couldn't support the low $2s, and that was well before US Debt ceiling crunch time and the following EU debacles.

I believe AJ's mega 71% is linked to a SP increase. I hope the board is realistic and raises the poll high, to at least $3. Some how it doubt it, it will enough to AJ to get his nose in the trough and the SH to look on.
