What the ALP supporters need to understand here, is it doesn't matter what Rudd, or Howard, or anyone else said at any time previous to before the last election.
Gillard and Swan categorically denied, without qualification, that there would be no carbon tax during this term of government if they won.
This was a solemn pledge that the Australian people took them at the word for, when they went to the ballot box.
As we now know, it was a complete lie, and no amount of justification, lies, backsliding or spin will ever change that.
They will be punished and rightfully so, at the next election.
And the same rules apply to Abbott if he's still running a pledge to repeal the Carbon tax & mining tax if he wins government next time.
If he fails to deliver on those pledges, he will also be called a liar by me and many others, and he himself will be purged at the ballot box.
Politicians need to understand that WE are in charge, they are there to represent US, and if they tell US they are or are not going to do something, well they better keep true to their word or WE will vote them out.
