Telfer Underground Fire Update Further to the release (26 May 2005) regarding a fire at the Telfer underground the status of the underground workings has now been ascertained. Early on the morning of May 26 a fire broke out in materials near a working magazine in the Telfer underground. The majority of the explosive material in the magazine burnt and an explosion occurred. The damage from this explosion was confined to a localised area and services to the underground were cut. All personnel in the mine were safely evacuated shortly after the event. Following an inspection over the weekend work commenced to reestablish the damaged services and power, ventilation, communications and mine pumping are now operating normally. Full mine development activities will recommence Tuesday 31 May. There was no impact from this incident on the open pit operations or the concentrator activities. Investigations continue as to the cause of the fire.
