what future for agriculture?, page-7

My knowledge of the economics of agriculture is limited.

A concern of mine is not only the loss of usable land through unbridled clearing and the resultant salinity and erosion of precious topsoil but the practice of foreign companies buying the freehold of the cream of our agricultural land, stripping it and then mining for coal or seam gas.

Also in Queensland, law for seam gas production over rides freehold or leasehold ownership rights of individuals giving the exploration and retrieval of seam gas unprecedented rights over ownership.

It seems that if the resource is 50 meters underground it can't possibly harm the surface.

Well that's been proved wrong with the pollution of under ground water supplies.

Every action has a reaction it seems. Agricultural land is no exception. The economics of our agricultural land should be guarded as a national treasure. Hundreds of millions of years in the making, topsoil can be destroyed in a year.

Please take time to read my attitude to resources below.
