hi ed, hi tri,
ed
yes what you get on your high horse about is the same thing that gets up my nose - bum covering behaviour - whether it is from charts of funnymentals.
I read Harry Dent a bit and I read Charlie Aitken --- chalk and cheese.
Harry is the best bum coverer I have seen where as Charlie Aitken calls it - and most often is correct - and heaven forbid - if he is wrong, he 'even admits his mistake' - almost unheard of in a paying publication.
I believe in market patterns and hence in charts - I don't believe they are predictable 100% and agree they only look backwards.
But - like waves in the ocean - you are only seeing the past and current waves that visit -------- but you sure know there will be a wave following -- it is only when and how high that is up for grabs.
Markets are very complex things - and they are very simple things --------- imo it is best to keep one's doings with them as simple as possible.
I have written many times on other forums that the complexity of modern markets actually works in our favour. As much as we get crappy with bots, hft, hedge funds and all the other crud - the reality is that if you study the business and know the management really well - it is easier than ever these days to value invest.
Pick the targets, pick the cherries - wait for the times when the world is going to end - seems to happen 4 or 5 times a year at present ----------- wait below the window for the baby to fall with the bathwater ---------- and press the button and catch the baby.
fml at 2c was a pretty good baby and imo fml is a dammed good baby now - even without the world ending (acutely that is).
Hence I mainly use funnymentals - but I do use technicals for entry and exits -- if I have funds available at the time.
And using technicals - I only try and look at the obvious. Things like is volume building or tapering away if the sp is rising or falling. Is there a big spike in volume on a big bar day, are the bars getting bigger or smaller in a rising pattern etc..
If the bar is getting bigger as the sp rises - you can be more confident that if those bars are getting smaller.
We may all believe that these things don't tell us about tomorrow - but they do mean something. They do tell a story - whether that story for tomorrow can be telegraphed or not - we all have our different beliefs.
have a great day
