Forget the politics. The reality is that if a flood of asylum seekers try to get to our shores and tragedy occurs, members of the Coalition with a conscience wont be able to sleep at night.
Trying to cloud the issue with unaccompanied children when the best solution for such cases is to get the children back to their family is just a smokescreen. The reality is that there are tens of thousands of asylum seekers already in Malaysia and Indonesia looking for a place of refuge. If you were truly concerned about the welfare of asylum seekers in Malaysia you would welcome the fact that the Malaysia solution provides up to 4000 UNCR cleared asylum seekers currently wallowing in Malaysia the opportunity to gain residency in Australia.
More importantly the fact that those arriving by boat would not be allowed to remain would act as a disincentive to come on the perilous sea journey to Australia.
I know there would be many Coalition members of good conscience. They must stand up on this issue and take a bipartisan approach. IMO if Tony Abbott was to initiate this it would be seen as responsible leadership and he would attain greater respect from a wider public. He will have broken the back of the NO NO tag. Mind you I have enough faith in human nature to believe that if he did pass the border control legislation he will have done it for all the right reasons that relate to humanity and border control.
I hope he can take a Statesman's position on this before its to late.
