Rangi, the asylum seekers currently being released into the community are those with family and friends in Australia who are willing to take them in. That was in the ministerial press releases which were widely reported.
It was also stated that they will have no access to Centrelink but will be permitted to work while their application for asylum is further processed.
I'd say this is a win for both the asylum seekers and the taxpayers.
