Well, there are a few theories why the divergence took place.

IMH view the reasons for the divergence 1/ poor economic US activity, thus a mass outflows from the USD to EUR.
The main catalyst for the divergence and I am sticking with it 2/ monetary policy hit an all time low in dec 01 if I recall correctly.

This in effect Is inflationary as indicated by the CRB Index stringly uptrending (the broadest measure of inflation) it was at this exact time that all commodites whether agricultural or industrial begun to move off its lows and firm. Of course I good be very wrong, but that's my view and I am sticking with it. Inflation is going to be the main driver for commodities.
