Yellowcake, Uranium does look like the energy answer for a while at least. But even uranium is a finite resource.

I dont think gold will be useless in an energy starved environment and will probly thrive due to its high thermal and electrical conductivity. These properties will make it even more important in improving efficiencies of any equipment used in an energy depleted society.
