Religion is a tool to control the masses.
Works especially well on the underclass. "Sure you may be unhappy now, but all men are equal in the eyes of the lord. Through hard work and sacrifice you will be cared for in the afterlife in his kingdom".
What better way to keep the peasants working? Yeah your life is "%#%$", but keep working and doing your chores, greatness awaits.
