I believe they over time have and are building a model of understanding the Aussie military mind. How they think and react and how this evolved over time

The REALLY big picture gets formed.

On the ground intelligence would be much preferred over reading the mass media of the country you are spyng on.

They would assume that the same filtering and control that controls what people read in China are at work in the Aussie press
