Fallguy's correct in that it is arrogant to insist that immigrants assimilate into Australian society. Many migrants that I know maintain a duallity which dogs them all their lives- they maintain a picture of 'home' that existed when they left and is locked in time. When they go 'home' for a holiday they see great changes and feel that they have been left behind.
This doesnt apply to all, some who have truly left the past behind.
One of the factors (IMO) in the failure of the republican movement in Aust was the great mass of british migrants who still held some allegiances to 'home'. It could also be argued that the majority of the parliament is also favourable to this remnant allegiance to a foreign power.
In NZ with its greater proportion of english stock its not an issue, the monarchy is there to stay.
