" and that includes the vast majority of Indonesian citizens."

I beg to disagree with you there, Banjar.
No doubt there are areas of population in Indonesia that are "friendly" towards us, but I feel that is not the case in Java, at least.
Even a friend who converted to Islam to marry a girl from Bandung, and could wear his little "fez" over there was warned by his inlaws over there not to visit because of the anti-west sentiment a few years back.
I have personally seen Muslim males spit at the sight of female (generally Scandinavian) backpackers with their cut-off shorts & braless tee-shirts in Jakarta and parts south thereof.
I was always told to wear long trousers & shirt when working there lest you lose "respect".
I have NEVER seen an Indonesian male wearing shorts where I spent most of my time.
They found the dress and behaviour of the average Western tourist quite objectionable, and tourists by large were who they encountered.
In recent weeks, reading the opinion articles & letters to the editor in the Jakarta Post, I noted that Japanese and now mainland Chinese were their preferred tourists.
i dont really think we are the flavour of the month over there, and havent been for some time.
The population of Java is considerably better informed about politics and world events than most of us would believe. Anti-West feelings were stirred up over there by events such as the Gulf War ( I was there for mark1), Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, and so on.
No, they dont really like us.

    GZ
