Steve Keen's debt deflation idea is based on the premise that when the private sector is in a balance sheet recession, consumers will rightly pay down debt and aggregate demand falls.
However, what Keen fails to consider is the that government will always step in to fill the demand gaps left when the private sector runs a surplus. Government surplus = private sector savings. This is why Steve Keen sold property and predicted gloom a year before the biggest yearly increase in property in recent memory. He is considering one sector of the economy (private) in isolation of the other (public).
