Diamond drilling at depth is expensive. That deep diamond hole at Rocklands cost in the order of $180,000 so there has to be a lot of research beforehand to justify expenditure of this magnitude.
It does not take many of these holes to blow a budget so all those shallower holes give the clue to where best to locate the deeper and costly drilling.
This is why at Wilgar for instance CuDeco has such short spaced cheaper RC regolith drilling[ they own their own rigs] mixed with some slightly deeper diamond until they get a better understanding of the mineralogy. Then, when they are satisified,the deeper drilling will occur.
