Guys, I agree with your sentiments but you are all missing the point.
Power has to be transmitted around the country in both cases.
Transferring power via the electricity grid is actually very efficient.
With fuel cells, that power is transmitted via gas in pipelines rather than electricity in cables and wires, and is probably less efficient.
The gains come from the efficiency of the fuel cell units as compared to the efficiency of the large coal fired power stations.
As far as a quiet camping unit is concerned, you would still need a gas bottle to feed it, but it's not a bad idea though.
