If Calcifer do not want to have to pay their new lawyers the $200 000 or so they will demand to get their case ready for the Mt M trial in March then a settlement in January 2012 would be exactly what I would expect.
Has this decision already been made? Rumours of that kind would explain the buying on the 23rd.
A BM JV rumour would also do the trick.
They are both genuine company makers for MNM, and an ann confirming either should deliver a 25c+ MNM SP.
