I reckon he's a good bloke typical of those you find on construction projects anywhere around the world, particularly in remote or difficult areas. These types find it easy to work and live with people of any culture in any circumstances because they are looking more for what they have in common with others rather than what they differ on. Often this common interest comes down to the project they may be working on, everybody has an common interest in making it happen, and race or cultural difference takes a back seat. If it doesn't you simply won't be able to see it through.
As for those who see him as a mercenary I don't think you understand his mindset. Blokes like him may look as if they are chasing the big money and going into places most people wouldn't dare, but I think you find for most of them the money is not the real reason. Big money means big challenges, remote and dangerous places, excitement and then at the end of the day the huge satisfaction of having accomplished something that few others would even dare try, and being paid to do it is almost a bonus. Sure, they will take the money and spend it, but even when they do put away their sizeable nest egg, they still want to keep going. That is why you can find many men well past retirement age still working on remote projects around the world.
I think Wood will go back to Iraq and I say good luck to him. I reckon he has worked out what mistakes he made and won't make them again. He doesn't look the sort of bloke to let one setback put him out of the game.
