Myrtle Rust woud still affect plantings - severely curtailing growth and therefore carbon sequestered.
the "no evidence" it will affect mellee plantings is misleading - scientists are still figuring out which species are vulnerable in the field
I'm with yellowcake on this one - the rust needs to be given more attention
My mother works in a Landcare organisation - these people are constantly going around cleaning up bush land.
She says she hasn't seen any rust herself but anecdotally its all over the place - victoria and nsw for sure, and manages to pop up all over the place - it can spread far. Its only a matter of time before it appears in WA in my opinion.
Anecdotally, the rust doesn't like the dry - so thats a good sign, at least.
CCF and COZ should be more active in ascertaining the susceptibility of their crops and how they might protect them. It's quite possible companion planting could help.
