I did mention CH4 emanating from open cut which is 21 tines more powerful GHG than CO2. CO2 does NOT emanate from open cut mining. Any mine that does emit CO2 has been "cooked" by volcanics and is probably something like an anthracite mine. This type of coal is unsuited for gasification given its low H content.

As for your PhD slurr, sorry you feel so put down, but I don't have a PhD, just the standard Mk 1 brain you have. I have chosen to use mine.

If Govts are to worry about liquid fuel, you can bet politics dictate that it will be on Victorian brown coal that will be favoured to keep jobs, housing and industry alive in Victoria, not some godforsaken dirt in central Australia.
