The most simple market I can think of is the sale of an asset or right between two individuals. If I own the right to mine for iron ore on an area of land then I can choose to hold this for as long as I like, use it, or sell it. There is no way for you to short sell my mining right to someone else unless I create an instrument that gives you that right.
Short selling is a recent construct of equity markets and is NOT deeply rooted in every market.
What I find most interesting about FMG is the level of shorting activity and the resulting price movements. I just think that at the time that shorters whip themselves into a frenzy, FMG is relatively more undervalued and presents an opportunity to buy. The flip side is that when sentiment turns around and the shorters stop the frenzy then FMG may become overvalued.
I won't be selling my FMG shares until Bungi's charts show that the shorters have moved on to other targets.
