I like most white Australians knew very few Aborigials as a kid, one to be exact. He came from Wyndham W.A. I dont know how he came to be at our white middle class school but he ended up in my form.
He was a full blood kid who spoke language and unlike many of his friends was not removed from his parents as they were both black.
Two of his Grandparents(tribal people) were neck chained and marched off and excecuted with dozens of the rest of his tribe. 1926. Around the time Hitler was about to come to power in Germany. The Forrest River massacre. We can deny it happened (as neo nazis deny the Holocaust in Germany) but it did happen during my fathers generation as did many smaller maasacres and murders of Aboriginal people.
Thousands of mixed race children were removed from their parents up to and including my lifetime.
Even after Aborigianl people were taken off the "Flora and Fauna" list and given citizenship in the late sixties mixed children were still commonly removed.
The Aboriginal activists actions yesterday were very inappropriate and I am not saying excusable but if I were Aboriginal and I knew the history I would be very pissed off too.
There is a worthwhile debate here about how welfare spending is appropriated and where Aborigianl welfare has gone wrong but please Andrew dont try to bullshit me. Lets deal with the facts.
The funny thing is Ive just upset at least 36 people for having a compassionate approach to the first Australians on whos country we have all become wealthy.
