south island west coast and near Fox/Franz Josef glaciers has the best scenery. Consider driving from Queenstown through the pass to the west coast, Central Otago is stunning with rivers, valleys and great wineries. Arrowtown is beautiful especially in Autumn.
North is pretty too, not as spectacular imo.
