Liberalities are waking up to a new world this morning and what a somber one it is. Read this over your toast and latte With hopes rising over the past few weeks that there could be an opportunistic run to the right of the speaker a new poll has put up front the reality that a week in politics is a long time. Perhaps it is that political commentators should preface their thoughts on this before putting pen to paper or finger to key. Meanwhile the more rational commentators among us have been telling all and sundry for some time that the exuberance being shown by the Liberal side of things could be well be short lived. We have been trying desperately to put things on a more sensible plane. We have been pointing out that there is some considerable time between the present and the next election and that there are a variety of variables at foot that are going to impact adversely on their hopes. This message is not getting through to some - Pine on TV at the moment needling away, putting forward the proposition that the rise in the government's stocks in the recent poll is not surprising because "this always happens during the summer season - (boy! I have been following politics for some time but this one is news to me) and so it seems that they refuse to listen. Death throes! How does it go? Denial, then anger, and then acceptance. The attitude at the moment is that the Liberals have not got past the denial stage. "I simply dont believe the latest Neilson Poll, showing an increase in her popularity...", I can imagine them saying. Still thinking that they have not lost government, acting as if they still hold the reins of power. trying to dictate to the elected government. This attitude means nothing that they will be sailing into the wind as we head into the second half of the electoral cycle. In the interest of democracy (yes we do need a viable opposition and alternative government) it is vital that there be a change in mental attitude. However things look as though they are going to get worse before they get better for the Liberals. The work that they have put into convincing voters that the carbon and resource taxes are bad taxes has been very successful. Firmly planted in mind these ideas are now going to come back to bite bottoms. As the two policies take effect the recognition will dawn that Mr. Abbott has been on the big con. He has been lying and the bite will follow. It is going to hurt! Hurt because people do not like liars, especially subtle ones. And how could they? After all we have been getting the liar message for oh, oh, ohhhhhhh so long!! lol.
