So for retirees alternatives to a rental stream is to:
A. Sell investment properties and for a lot of them pay substantial amount of capital gain
B. Then put this reduced capital to work earning bank account / term deposit interest as its low risk than say blue chip stock shares (or its lower risk in their minds anyway)
C. Compare the Yeild - well depending on property to property the yeild may be better or worse than bank interest.
What some people don't see is who is determining your bank yeild? The bank.
A lot of retirees feel comfortable with the fact they determine the rent they will and can charge rather than letting their income stream be dictated by 3rd parties.
