This is way beyond my level of knowledge about hedging but couldn't they just be hedging against derivatives such as CDSs.
Lets say they have a CDS for a Greek Default wouldn't it make sense to go short on a swag of companies around the world to hedge your bet.
I often wondered about the shorting making no sense as they don't seem to care about the price very much. Maybe they don't up to a point.
I think the Short Interest will remain high until someone in a dark pool is willing to sell them shares. Then we will just see the Short Interest plummet without there being a short squeeze. By the way they often short off market also.
