    Over the last 4 years BHP has plundered $20bn in share buy backs the end result..... stellar earnings growth and a share price that has gone from $50 to $36.
    My point is if that was paid out as dividend via a higher payout ratio then the share price would without question be in that vicinity and BHP would be trading at a higher PER hence giving it superior paper for earning acretive acquisitions.
    They have squandered the easy money made as a result of a historic mega commodities boom.
    A higher payout ratio will equate to a higher share price. If BHP manangement signalled to the market they would be going to a doubling payout ratio the market and many yield orientated funds would be buying this stock big time
