If uranium was in huge surplus then noone would care what we did with our uranium.
But assuming the shortage remains, and uranium is needed for eg. electricity generation, then we cannot snub our noses at the rest of the world and say, "We have plenty of uranium. But we're not prepared to develop any new resources and export it to you. Sorry about that."
What we do with uranium for our own needs is another matter. I suggest that Labor will shortly amend their policy and permit new uranium mines to be developed for export of uranium - but not for local use.
That way they can save face and maintain their ideaological stand against the use of uranium, while accepting the reality that because there is a world wide uranium shortage we have no choice but to be pragmatic and to open up our resources for world consumption.
