Basically it was bought at the top of the market (mid 2008) and as with many assets around the world was worth nothing by 2009 and had to be divested.

Dont forget, RIO bought Alcan about the same time at the top of the market and thats cost them heaps, so even Blue Chips got stung by the GFC.

Cash is the key issue as always. The 3 amigos plan does have merit - but no funding.. The BCN boards plan has cash, less risk but probably less upside for shareholders.
