I never switch my puter off. I think it uses 1W in sleep mode. When I go to it, I hit enter it is immediately alive. I imagine it would burn more than 6W booting up, so not worth switching off.
A microwave uses quite a bit, toasters and jugs even more. ANYTHING with a heater costs you and a tumble drier would be worst because of the long time it runs. Ceiling fans, OTOH use buggerall. The washing machine chugs away for hours and should not be forgotten.
Your fridges shouldn't use what you say because the quoted power usage is measured while the motor is running so you have to multiply that by the duty-cycle. But there are a number of heaters and circulation fans that run continuously though.
We have a usage meter which allows you to monitor actual usage. They should be available via your state's Dept. of Energy or just look or the ads. Bet you could find one on ebay but I imagine you would need a sparky to install. We paid $45 for a full audit which included a couple of remote controlled switches to switch on/off the TV and all ancillary items, some compact fluoro bulbs, a "water-saver" shower head [fitted] and the power monitor [fitted]. Waste of time really, we never use the switches or look at the monitor and the bulbs have the wrong bases.
