    Hello Lastronin,

I respect and appreciate your concern as a resident of Malaysia. The experience with Bukit Merah should give everyone pause to carefully consider the Lynas plant.

But I ask you to do just that, carefully consider and compare the two facilities. How does the level of radation at Bukit Merah compare to Lynas? Isn’t it true according to the IAEA, the waste to be produced by Lynas will contain exceedingly low levels of radioactivity compared to those at Bukit Merah?

How radioactive is the LAMP waste? Some people compare Lynas to Chernobyl or Fukushima. Let’s do a simple comparison easily verified by a few Google searches.

At Chernobyl radiation levels of 10,000mSv/h (per hour) were recorded outside the building where workers used shovels to remove pieces of the exploded reactor core.

At Fukushima the peak reading was taken on March 16 near a reactor core at 1000mSv/h (per hour) NOTE THE VALUES ARE PER HOUR!

At LAMP a worker could get 0.2 mSv PER YEAR from WLP waste as follows… The IAEA Lynas report page 33 states, “A simple calculation shows that a daily ingestion of 100mg of material with a Th-232 activity concentration of about 6Bq/g would give rise to a worker dose of only 0.2 mSv per year.” (PER YEAR!)

Yes, I know some people say, “ No level of radiation is safe no matter how low”. If that is true, why did Fuziah Salleh cook her mutant chicken over a gas burner? Trace amounts of radioactive radon gas are released when natural gas is used for heating or cooking. Why is low level radiation ok for her but not for Lynas? I suppose she never had a dental x-ray and doesn’t have a smoke alarm in her home, either. Fuziah Salleh would receive less radiation from living next to LAMP than getting an x-ray at her dentist. How can this audacious claim be proved? Only by measuring during temporary operation and continuous monitoring thereafter, if approval is given.

There are numerous radiation measuring devices in place, 7 monitors within the plant, 19 at various distances from the plant, and 7 along the road from port to LAMP, I believe those are the correct numbers. Sensitive scientific instruments will provide the information required for sound judgment about radiation danger, will they not?

I respectfully request your thoughtful response, Lastronin, thank you.
