from my understanding is incorrect in the impression that it conveys.
These wells do have a high initial decay rate(logarithmic) but then have a long slow decay rate and can be in commercial production for 20 to 30 years. The reason for the high number of wells is to be able to fracture the host rock so that it is contiguous.You can only drill so far before you have to stop due to physical limitations.
