Could al-Qaeda want the US to react militarily? Aren't the "fundamentalists" after a final war? Hasn't the US played right into their hands?
Of course the occupied countries would be the perfect place to recruit bombers, they die thinking they are reaping revenge, or fighting a just battle, no doubt they are told this too. Really though, the idea may be to illicit a response that is out of proportion to the action. Trillions of dollars spent in a couple of years and all the lives lost, im sure if Bin Laden is alive he would be extremely happy with that.
