Just an aside on local tourism, ... as an Aussie campervaning tourist also inspecting his investment asset :) , we found Westport itself to be quite dreary with coal dust and/or associated gasses permeating the air.
But the country to the north up to Karamea - great little pub with the best white-bait fritters - and just further north to the start of the Heaphy Track is magic.
I can easily see an historical mining slant with emphasis on past, present and planned future eco-activities being educationally as well as historically very interesting and could perhaps be a DOC project in concert with the local Westport and Buller Councils to attract and hold tourists for at least a day - as an adjunct to the natural, rugged beautiful scenery attractions both north and south of Westport. Being able freedom camp in near wilderness is a joy.
