share trading should never be taught at school

I had an interesting conversation with my Mother tonight, bless her cotton socks. I was chatting about some recent trades and made a passing remark that I wish I had learnt more about property and shares (or any financial sense) at school. I feel my interest in these matters, piqued a lot later, has given me a time disadvantage to those who get in earlier.

Her comment. Share dealing is gambling, why would you teach gambling in school? Teenagers getting their first job are not equipped emotionally or intellectually to handle any sort of exposure to the markets.

I asked her what should be taught about money in school then. Saving, Super and not spending more than you earn she replied. Saving is what she learnt, not spending is what saw her through to a comfortable life and Super is what she personally wishes she had jumped onto when it first became available.

Interesting point mum - throwing it out there to some esteemed colleagues. What do you think?
