Personally I find it hard to believe that with the current expanding range of "sub-lethal" technologies and paramilitary swat teams deployed, it would not be that difficult a process to progressively disarm at least the greater bulk of the law-abiding members of the community...
Of course criminals and more hard-core gun-rights advocates would probably end up keeping their weapons, or being killed in the process of confiscation...
It would not be a quick process but the blanket banning of ammunition sales across the country would probably assist and boot-strap the process...
In fact I guess the government could even claim the the citizens guns are necessary for the conduct of government and demand surrender under the latest decree...
I would guess that some attempt at arms confiscation would be the start of whatever seems to be coming in the US...
