the gerrymander is historic.it is not really relevant to keep harping on about Labor started it before most of us were born [me 1953]. The Gerrymander exists because Qld is the biggest,most decentralised State in Australia.Electorates just can't be drawn incorporating equal numbers of electors basically. Size and population dispersal is also why we don't daylight save,too btw.
The Beattie Gerrymander/Joke was single party voting no need for preferences.This suited the swinging voters,those quite uninterested in politics who actually resent having to vote at all. By just voting 1 and not giving Party preferences? well it didn't help the Coalition,split their vote and independents like Cunningham and Wellington along with One Nation were able to capture especially National Party seats.
You do realise kingpins that Frank Nicklin was Country Party Premier for years before Joh? It was the DLP break up with the ALP that lost state gov't wasn't it? what? late 1950's? Do you know the history of Joh coming into Power? Didn't Liberal Sir Gordon Chalk try to "coup" him in 1968?
Anyway the Liberals have had a very turbulent alignment with the Country/National Party.Liberal members switching sides,bleeding Don Lane,the National Party and the Gold Coast.Crikey the Joh for PM campaign. Kingpins the Liberal Heirachy in Sydney and Melbourne don't like the Qld Nationals one iota other than to win some seats so they [the Liberals] can Rule.
Only in Qld does the old Country Party have any political significance whatsoever and are fully resistant to being absorbed into the Liberal Party like is happening/proposed for the rest of Australia.
