You are right that excessive sweating can be a side effect of opiods as it can also be for SSRIs such as Prozac.You are also right that it can be a distressing and debilitating condition for sufferers. And, yes, it is not simply an issue of odour, hyperhidrosis can interfere with sleep and daily activities.

To use an example, a family member of mine had surgery to address the issue which was interfering with the ability to safely perform surgical procedures.

However, although excessive sweating is a legitimate issue of concern, I'm not sure how the patch might address this better than oral medications, given that the source of the problem is brain rather than GI.

Chook suggests that reduced levels of drug needed for the patch may lead to reduced levels of sweating and, if so, that would certainly be a welcome benefit. However, even if that is not the eventual outcome, I'm sure that the other benefits of the patch vs oral tablets will more than encourage sufferers to want to make the switch.
