As an avid reader of the HotCopper Politics Forum, as well as an occasional poster, I have become very disturbed recently by the general vein of what has been going on in here.
Let us face the fact, an important one, that we should, in our interest, be ready learners - have you all heard the saying "Life long learner"? No doubt you have - and I can hear you all saying: "Yes I have". Life long learning is a recent idea (catchphrase). An idea which attempts to change attitudes within the individual so as to promote our ability to keep up with an ever changing world. It is in our interest to grab hold of this concept, not let go and forge ahead. To be adaptive, flexible and willing. Willing to accept new ideas and ways. No matter how hard, the thought should be at the back of the mind the question (I should have said front) how can I maximize my interest by adapting to reality
Now the general vein of things in here is diametrically opposed to the "Life Long Learning" concept - there are exceptions and I will let you know how you can detect these shortly - there is indeed a demonstrated reluctance to change our ideas. And this goes for the majority. There are, though, some learned posters here in this forum, posters who have something to offer, posters who put forward ideas which could make things easy for a lot of people if only they had a healthy change in attitude. A change in attitude which would make them more reception to ideas, no matter how uncomfortable they may feel about new propositions.
So I guess that this comes down to two questions. The first is, how do I detect when a good idea has been put forward? The second is, how do I detect when a post is blocking my way to adopting a healthy change in attitude? Now I am not out to indoctrinate anyone here but could I suggest that the answer to these two questions come at one. If you come across a post which appeals to the emotions rather than the commonsensical, posts which name call people, calling them communists, socialists, red raggers etc, then you could usefully move on. Instead, look for posts which offer positive ideas. I will not name any of the latter. We all know who they are but suffice to say that they are commonly called communists, socialists, red raggers etc.
