Yes they do unfortunately, however in this case there is really no concern at all. Scary I am sure for the locals affected along the coast but not so far South and inland.
Damn scary for the likes of me that lives in high rise apartments. Thankfully I wasn't in mine when this occurred, I get a bit uneasy swaying in the breeze in a high rise. The last one here in Jakarta 2 years ago at 7.2 was bad enough let alone one like this.
Perspective again...
I will even place a positive slant on it. Quakes of this magnitude shift the subsurface and surface ground significantly. In a roundabout way you could term this loosely as natural fraccing, free of charge from Mother Nature.
Shales (in this case coal shales) breakup easily and these constant events over many years off the coast of Sumatra could be a major contributing factor as to why Sumatra is so gas rich and easily accessible gas at that. Along with the fact it is a major ancient volcano location, Ranau having a large volcanic lake south of the Ranau PSC lease. Have a look on Google, it is massive and one I really want to see.
Just maybe that (along with the joint study data they have) is why QPN are planning to go straight to drilling so early simutaneously with 2D seismic, whereas in Aus they probably wouldn't.
Early gas shows would be a magnificent boost to QPN, and us.
