Restricting immigration won't stop terrorism, Govt says
    12:03 AM July 23

The Federal Government has condemned suggestions that Australia should re-introduce a racially based immigration policy to counter the threat of terrorism.

Federal Minister for Multicultural Affairs John Cobb says the Government's policies on immigration are designed to facilitate community acceptance and harmony, and there are means in place to deal with those who try to upset the balance through inciting violence and hate.

"Any individual who transgresses our laws will obviously be taken to task over it," he said.

Mr Cobb says calls to change Australia's policy are short-sighted and counter-productive.

"The long-term answer to Australia not getting into the situation we've got in London, we've had in Madrid, that we've had in 9/11 and Bali is not to isolate sections of our community," he said.

"To simply push people away and say you're not part of Australia, we don't want you, I mean that actually is going to promote the problems that exist overseas."

Mr Cobb says one of the best ways to stop terrorists targeting Australia is to promote a broad-based immigration policy.

"Pursuing the policy we have of embracing people, of bringing them in, is actually going to come through," he said.

He has also congratulated Australia's Muslim community for taking a strong stand against recent terrorist acts in London.
