Cokal (CKA) has finally begun loading the first coal for shipment from its Bumi Barito Mineral coking coal mine in Indonesia after experiencing delays due to unsafe water levels.

The company today announced water levels at the Krajan Jetty, which had been “unseasonably low”, were now at a safe enough level to begin loading coal.

It comes after the company said on January 17 that the loading of coal at the Krajan jetty had been delayed but would resume “within days”.

The coal is now set to be transported to a permanent jetty at Batu Tahup, where it will be stockpiled and eventually loaded onto larger barges and sold in the domestic market.

The sale of the coal in the domestic market is part of the terms of an offtake agreement between Cokal and PT Sumber Global Energy.

CKA’s long-term plan to mitigate future potential issues with river water levels is to construct a road directly from BBM pit three to the Batu Tuhup Jetty, dubbed the Mohing Access road.

The company said it had made “significant progress” on the Mohing Access road, which will become the preferred coal evacuation route and is expected to be operational by March 2023.

CKA shares were last trading at 21 cents at 1:00 pm AEDT.
