Sayona Mining (SYA) has completed a trial feed of ore into the crushing plant at its North American Lithium (NAL) operation in Québec, Canada.

The company said it’s another major milestone in the long-awaited restart of the NAL operation, having processed 400 tonnes of spodumene ore as part of the concentrator commissioning.

With the NAL restart having reached 90 per cent completion by the end of December 2022, the company said it remains on track to produce its first spodumene product before the end of March.

The CEO of Sayona’s Québec operations, Guy Belleau, said 2023 was shaping up to be a “remarkable” year for the business.

“The enthusiasm and pride to finally produce lithium here will be carried over to all of our projects and will propel us towards achieving our ambitious goals for all of Québec,” Mr Belleau said.

“The moment will be historic! It is here in Québec, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, that the leading lithium producer in North America will operate.”

He added that Sayona has maintained a key focus on community relations, with 90 per cent of the NAL workforce coming from Abitibi-Témiscamingue and more than C$40 million (A$42) million invested with local suppliers since January 2022.

Sayona Managing Director Brett Lynch congratulated the NAL team on completing the trial ore feed.

“Our key project milestones are on track, and I look forward to seeing the first saleable lithium concentrate at the plant as we move towards becoming North America’s leading lithium producer.”

Shares in Sayona Mining were down 2.54 per cent to 28.8 cents at 11:00 am AEDT.
