Battery manufacturer EcoGraf (EGR) has gained a notice of allowance for its EcoGraf HFfree technology from the US Patent and Trademark Office.

EcoGraf HFfree technology is an alternative purification method for manufacturers of battery anode material, which is used to create lithium-ion batteries. The environmentally friendly and cost-effective process produces high-quality battery anode matter using flake graphite.

The US patent will be issued shortly following payment of the issue fee, and signals EGR’s method to create the technology will be protected in the US until November 2042.

Commercialisation of the technology also complies with the US Treasury IRA guidelines on clean vehicle criteria, which will strengthen mineral supply chains.

The patent, filed on 1 November 2022, also protects the company’s battery recycling method, which is an important element in the transition to cleaner energy.

EcoGraf’s HFfree’s purification technology was first developed in Australia in 2017 and has since been refined and tested throughout the world.

This comes less than a month after signing a non-binding cooperation agreement with POSCO International to sell its battery anode material products for an initial ten-year term.

Under the Patent Convention Treaty (PCT), patents have been applied for at core locations EcoGraf plans to manufacture its technology, including Europe, Korea, Malaysia and Australia.

To further protect EcoGraf’s technology in the US the company has also applied for a continuation of its patent.

EcoGraf shares lifted 9.09 per cent to 18 cents at 11:40 am AEST.
