Critical Resources (CRR) has executed an agreement in principle (AIP) with the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON) regarding the ongoing exploration and development of its Mavis Lake lithium project in Ontario, Canada.
The company announced that both parties would work together to enable exploration to continue at the project.
The AIP follows more than 18 months of positive dialogue and relationship development between the Critical Resources and the WLON.
WLON Chief Clayton Wetelainen said the agreement marked the “first step” in the two groups’ journey together.
“We acknowledge the importance of lithium as a critical mineral that is needed to support renewable energy and more sustainable future,” he said.
“We remain aware of the importance of developing projects in a manner that respects our lands, our water and our Elders.”
CRR Managing Director Alex Cheeseman said the company has been engaging with First Nation communities since the beginning of the project.
“Formalising the relationship through the AIP reflects the desire of both groups to collaborate and advance the Mavis Lake project in a manner that is sustainable, while also ensuring that the economic benefits of the project will have a positive impact on WLON and other First Nation communities that hold a deep and unbroken connection to the land and waters in the area,” he said.
Critical Resources kicked off a spring exploration program at its Mavis Lake project in May following the discovery of high-grade lithium earlier this year.
The company aims to identify further targets within the project before commencing a summer drilling program in the coming months.
Critical Resources also announced that it plans to introduce regular community engagement for Mavis Lake, including project update meetings between WLON and the company, as well as developing the foundations for an impact benefit agreement.
