If Shorten has been gagged about the Slipper affair, the shrewdest strategy he can take now is go to the back bench stating he can not work as a Minister for the current PM.
In time, this will do him the most good and restore some credibility after the "Sky News" interview - if done timely, it will also put some perspective on the saga.
