They've got bigger problems than the national park. If you do a Google Earth of Cleveland Potash you'll struggle to spot it. The 'tailings' are pumped into the North Sea - and why not it's salt water and natural minerals - sea life loves it.
The deposit is deep and the shaft sink is difficult - not sure if it was ICI or Anglo who sank the original Boulby shafts but one was grout and the other freeze. Neither was easy.
Once they reach the Potash it'll be easier because of the pioneering work at Boulby - room and pillar doesn't work. I worked there 20 years ago. Underground is a bit different to the surface in Yorkshire - One is >22C even in winter - I'll leave you to guess which.
