Many people better care because if illegal manipulation is occurring it will be found out and bring the whole market unstuck because then every company will be under some form of scrutiny. It cannot be hidden indefinitely because it has to come out through share trades, if it's short-long-short-long action can't do much about that, perfectly legal. Definitely huge 'pulses' of shares being traded at big price movements.
