I'm of the opinion the report is essentially unbiased, however it is not good journalism. One cannot expect the ABC to be a propaganda machine to promote either side, however it is unreasonable to let the comparison of the LAMP to Fukushima, Chernobyl and Bopal go unchallenged.

A cursory viewing might assume Mahamud Yaakub is simply using these cases as examples of how bad design, bad management and corruption can lead to bad outcomes. The actual position of SMSL and the activist residents is that the radiation exposure risk from the LAMP is as bad as the worst of these plants.

So far all the technical inquiries into the LAMP are contradicting these claims. The plant is designed well, the environmental impacts are well researched, the management are well trained and the monitoring is in place and fully accessible to public scrutiny.

The continuing challenge for Lynas is to educate the community that the LAMP is not a nuclear plant. It is hard to see at this stage of the project how that can be achieved without the plant getting up and running.
