The conversely, the Australian people should compensate all those shareholders of failed companies. You can't simply elect to skim off the cream of the successful ones without balancing a fairer equation of giving back to all the unsuccessful ones.
I knew a man once who was a property developer who did deals with 20 or more people at a time. "Half share of the profits" was his mantra. He only had to have one successful deal and he would get a half share of that person's profit. Unfortunately not all the deals were successful and he never offered to go a "Half share of the losses". Funny about that. I see the mining tax as that same mantra.
